This strange object is 70 mm (2.75") in diameter, quite thick and heavy. Between the owl's chest and the legend are some odd squiggles. Holding the article up the right way, and reading downwards, it reads W / ES / S. Holding the article upside down it reads ShMo... On the reverse, there is a dodo standing right with two stylized letters, an S and an M. Another, identical one was offered on ebay in November 2009, (obviously from the same casts) and was bought by my friend Reid Goldsborough. Update: Reid has done some very clever research into these (and other) owl objects and has discovered that they were part of a promotion by Proctor & Gamble Co. for Crest toothpaste given to dentists in the Late 1960s. See his owl medals website for lots of information about them (near the bottom of that page). |
This object was described as a vintage Greek paperweight. It is 7.5 cm (3") diameter and weighs 210g. It was apparently made in Greece, as a paperweight or tourist momento, because the back of it is protected by felt and stuck onto this is the original label in English, French, German and Greek describing the coin it was made from (a tetradrachm) and what appears to be the manufacturers reference number: No. 3 ΔE 21.693 and Made in Greece. |
Owl pendant 1. 5 cm (2") diameter, 26.2g. Helmeted head of Athena facing left on the obverse and the classical owl standing right, head facing, with AΘE to right and olive branch at upper left on the reverse. |
Illuminati gold-plated bar. 28mm x 50mm x 3mm. gold-plated. 2015. Obv: ILLUMINATIORDEN ("Order of the Illuminati") beneath the engraved image of Adam Weishaupt (co-founder of the "New World Order" group), beneath the Masonic eye in a pyramid above, two figures on the left, horned and winged Satan above a shrine on the right. Rev: "01.01.1776, Illuminati, Bayern Ingolstadt" above the Masonic eye on a pointless pyramid, with ANNUIT COEPTIS above and NOVUS ORDO SECLORUM" below, classical owl at bottom left. |
Owl pendant 2. 65 mm (2.6") diameter, 81 g. Pewter. 1920s-1930s? Classical owl standing right, head facing with AΘE to right and olive branch at upper left on the obverse. The reverse is blank. I am not sure what this was originally made for. There are two small holed tabs protruding from the back which were probably fixing this to some kind of backing, but they are half-broken off, possibly when this was removed. |

Silvered fourré Old Style Tetradrachm, Attica, Athens, 449-404 BC. Helmeted head of Athena right, serpent on helmet. AΘE, Owl standing right on branch. This is a fourré, i.e. an ancient counterfeit with a base metal (bronze) core, and silvered surface. AR obol, ancient Judaean imitation, 4th Century BC. A tiny silver obol, a birthday present for myself several years ago. The detail of the owl on this tiny 0.7g coin is quite astounding, though Athena's helmet visor has slipped down over her eyes by the look of it. Ref: Sear SGV 2530 |
